One to three days after the preparative regimen ends, your transplant will occur. The healthy blood stem cells will be infused into your bloodstream through your catheter, much like a blood transfusion. The infusion typically takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete.

You will be awake during the transplant, although you may be lightly sedated. Your medical team will check you frequently for signs of fever, chills, rash or chest pain.

The healthy blood stem cells will flow through your bloodstream to your bone marrow. After several days or weeks, they will begin producing healthy new blood cells. This is called engraftment.
